Irkutsk State Linguistic University (ISLU) was set up in 1948. ISLU is a unique higher educational institution on the territory of Eastern Siberia and Far East. ISLU is a reputable training centre for those who pursue a professional career in linguistics, modern foreign languages and communication studies. The overall enrollment in the University's 8 faculties is more than 3,500 students.

    EXTRA-CURRICULUM EDUCATIONAL SERVICES
    Students and teachers as well as 'outsiders' who are interested in language learning and related areas are offered a wide range of additional educational services including:
  • 3d or 4th foreign language learning;
  • Graduation qualifications in Public Relations / Management of Organization / Advertisement;
  • Graded or community-related teaching of foreign languages:
    • to beginners;
    • conversational versions;
    • to advanced learners;
    • to particular age groups of children.
  • "Young Polyglot" language learners community;
  • Preparatory and placement courses for international exams (FCE, TOEFL, IELTS, DAF);
  • Business German / Business French;
  • English for tourism / German for tourism.
Annually, more than 700 students use the opportunities of additional educational services at ISLU.


Grant Programmes
ISLU takes an active part in national and international programmes and foundations that help host top specialists and experts in various spheres of knowledge as well as put international research and academic projects into effect.
We also encourage our students and post-graduate researchers to seek for educational and study grants offered by various international organizations (IREX, Fulbright, DAAD, British Council, TACIS, etc.)


Opportunities for Foreign Students
The International Faculty invites students from other countries for programmes leading to Bachelor of Linguistics and Master of Linguistics degrees.
Bachelor's applicants usually take a one-year preparatory course, upon completion of which they can claim the National Certificate of the first level. Those who pass the national test will be enrolled for the first year of the University.
To be able to earn the Bachelor's Degree, students will be required to attend classes in the Russian language (8 to 20 hours per week during the course period), Theoretical Phonetics, Lexicology, Theoretical Grammar of Russian, Stylistics and Speech Culture, Business Russian, Russian Literature, Theory and Practice of Translation, Methods of Teaching the Russian Language, Introduction to Linguistics and other subjects.
For the Master's Degree, students in addition will be required to pursue Semiotics, Methods of Linguistic Analyses, Computer Technologies in Linguistic Research, Logic and Theory of Argumentation and Current Issues of Russian Philology.
Additionally, students will take one or two of the following subjects as electives: Russian Studies and History of Russia, History of Russian Culture, Philosophy, Economics, Sociology or Computer Science.
The International Faculty offers Summer Intensive Russian Language Programmes varying from 10 to 17 and up to 38 weeks.

Of particular interest to foreign students are summer programmes that are 3, 4, 8 and 10 weeks long. The curriculum includes either Russian only or Russian plus History and Literature of Siberia (taught in English and Russian). Foreign students have an outstanding opportunity to enjoy studying Russian on Olkhon Island - the biggest island of Lake Baikal.
All students of the International Faculty can take a national test in Russian and get national certificates (1st, 2d, 3d and 4th levels).
International Faculty students will be offered a broad variety of leisure pursuits that will add to their cultural, social and personal experience as learners of the Modern Russian.
For those who have already acquired their target Russian there are opportunities at the University's faculties such as the Modern English Language, Modern German Language, Modern Romance Languages and Modern Oriental Languages Faculties. Bachelor's or Master's or Doctor's degrees in Germanic and Romance Philology, Philosophy, History of Russia, Russian Literature, General Pedagogy and Methods of Teaching Languages (3 year programmes) have invariably been attractive academic options.
