Correspondence Department
Established in 1948.
The correspondence department is the only faculty in Siberia which offers an opportunity to get higher education certificate on linguistics by correspondence.
The head of the correspondence department is Natalya Ivanovna Torunova, a candidate of Pedagogics, a lecturer of the department of Methods of teaching at Irkutsk state linguistic university.
Students of the correspondence department get up - to - date professional knowledge and improve their skills and abilities in linguistics to get the qualification of a teacher or an interpreter (translator) without staying away from work.
The correspondence department offers its students higher education in the following:
- Linguistic and cross cultural communication
- The following profession lines are granted at the end of study:
022600 Theory and methods of teaching foreign languages and culture
- The qualification is:
- Linguist. Teacher of English;
022900 Translation practice and theory.
- The qualification is:
- Linguist. Translator and interpreter of English.
The correspondence department offers its students to improve their knowledge and specialize in one of the following fields: For the qualification
Linguist. Teacher of English following specializations are available:
- Methods of teaching in the pre - school establishments;
- Modern directions in linguistics.
For the qualification: Linguist. Translator and interpreter of English the following specializations are available:
- Translating and interpreting in the sphere of the environmental protection;
- Translating and interpreting in the sphere of economics;
- Translating and interpreting in the sphere of international and Russian laws.
Students of correspondence department can get additional qualifications and study 2 or more foreign languages (German, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish). Academic period is 3 years. And in the end of the course students get certificates in addition to the certificate of the main specialization.
The correspondence department allows students of other universities, colleges and technical schools to get higher education on Linguistics due to the principle of curriculum integration.
Graduates of technical and linguistic colleges, institutes and universities can get higher education in Linguistics at the correspondence department within 3 years.
Graduates of correspondence department can work as teachers, interpreters, translators, specialists on methods of teaching, consultants on bringing up children, managers of educational establishments.
Academic period is 5 years. All study process is broken up into 5 terms, each of them lasts 1, 5 month.
The basic strategies of the correspondence department are the following:
- The activity of the correspondence department is focused on providing schools and other educational establishments of the Irkutsk region and Siberia with highly qualified teachers of foreign languages and specialists on Methods of teaching linguistics; providing enterprises with experienced interpreters and translators.
- The correspondence department arranges the educational process for students to develop and improve their intellectual, cultural and moral characteristics.
The correspondence department includes:
- the management office of the faculty department;
- the English language school;
- the department of the English language;
- the correspondence department coordinates work of 20 departments, taking part in the educational process at the department.
The head of the department of the English language is Tatyana Alexandrovna Davydova. She is a candidate of Linguistics, a perspective young scientist.
Over 500 students study at the correspondence department. It is the second largest faculty in Irkutsk state linguistic university.
Professors, senior lecturers highly qualified perspective young teachers carry out the educational process at the correspondence department.
The main characteristics of educational process at the department are the following:

- Integration of curriculum with curriculums of other educational establishments of the Irkutsk region;
- Independent studying of specially prepared materials on all subjects of the curriculum;
- An opportunity to get free individual direct contact or online consultations with teachers of the faculty.
One of the main strategic directions of the correspondence faculty is to support school teachers of the countryside (village teachers).
In this direction the correspondent department cooperates with the Department of Compulsory and Professional Education to prepare stuff for schools of the Irkutsk region. Every year about 100 graduates of pedagogical schools and colleges get higher education in linguists at the Correspondence Department.
The correspondence department actively supports school teachers of foreign languages.
It holds annual courses of English for village teachers who studied English at University but did not work with it for a long time.
The correspondence department takes an active part in the annual competition "The best village teacher of a foreign language of the year".
The main directions of the work of the department are:
- high qualified teachers;
- management of students' scientific work;
- introduction of advanced technologies and scientific achievements into the process of correspondence education;
- introduction of modern technologies of distance education based on telecommunications and scientific approach.
- using materials adapted for distance education;
- introduction of modern up - to - date methods of teaching foreign languages;
- individual approach to the students in the process of study.
Management of distance education is based on using informational telecommunications in the process of education i.e. in providing students with necessary materials, consulting them online and carrying out the control of their studying activities.
Linguistic telecommunicational international projects, web forums and international competitions online are arranged.
Methodical work at the correspondence faculty is based on the concepts of integration and intensification of educational process and includes:
- working out up - to - date curriculums for preparing specialists of the new century;
- providing scientific and methodical basis for distance education;
- introducing new up -to - date educational technologies;
- using telecommunications in the educational process: materials and tests online, thesis on various courses online, distance education courses on some disciplines.
Scientific work at the department is carried out according to 5 directions:
- Carrying out scientific research and preparing papers, reports, qualification work on linguistics, pedagogics, psychology, methods of teaching foreign languages, health care.
- Students' taking part in seminars aimed at discussion modern scientific problems in different subjects.
- Students' work in the researching groups: "Modern technologies in the English language teaching process", "Verbal and non verbal communication", "scientific research activity".
- Carrying out experiments and approbation of scientific approaches during pedagogical practical training at school.
- Taking part in scientific conferences of the university. Students present their research theses which are published in annual collections of theses.
The correspondence faculty would be delighted to invite universities and colleges to collaborations and experience exchange in development of distance education and scientific research on linguistics, psychology, pedagogics, methods of teaching foreign languages and health care.
