Oriental Languages Department
:: Department of the Japanese Language
In September 1967 at Irkutsk urban foreign languages school on the initiative of regional branch of the "USSR-Japan" community and the University Of Foreign Languages began to work the first group on studying the Japanese language (the director of school was the assistant-professor Ulyanova M. Y). the very forst teachers were Zheleznyakov K. A.(he was one of the initiators for opening the school), Kozlov A. I., Lee Sy Syan, and later Lustritskiy D. K.

At present famous within Irkutsk interpreters and teachers studied in the first group for three years. These were Vlasov V. F., Pe Chun Dya V. P., Eshryev V. I. This group consisted of 13 students, and they had 2 lessons a week, 3 hours each. Originally, only the students of the Uni-versity of Foreign Languages could attend this school, however, since 1972 all the city youth have got such an opportunity.

In 1989 in the University of Foreign Languages at the English Language department was es-tablished the Oriental Languages chair and in 1990 there was opened the department of the Japanese Language (at that time the dean of the English language faculty was Ulyanova). The very first teachers were Pe Chun Dya V. P., Badueva N. B. and Chen Sun I O. R.

In 1990 the director of the Japanese language department methodical association was Pe Chun Dya V. P. Thanks to her direct participation, there was established a correspondence with To-yama University, concerning possible practical studies for our students in Japan. Then in 1991 the first Japanese teacher showed up. It was Deguchi Masako. The Japanese Language depart-ment organizers faced many difficulties, such as lack of textbooks, audio- and video-materials, programs, etc. At that time the Department on Cultural Affairs of the Japanese Embassy in Moscow, the University of Asia and Africa and the Humane Faculty of Toyama University ren-dered our university an invaluable assistance.

In 1989 3 Japanese representatives came to the Economic Symposium that was held in Irkutsk University of National Economy (nowadays the Irkutsk State Economic Academy). Among those representatives there was a professor of the Russian Language and Literature chair, Toyama University, Mr. Fuji, who became the first guarantor for students' exchange. In 1990 taking all the specific features of Irkutsk University of Foreign Languages into considera-tion, professor Fuji decided to give the students of our university an opportunity for practical study in Japan.

Thus, there had been a regular students' exchange between Irkutsk and Toyama since 1990 (every year 2 and later 3 students had a year practical study in Toyama). At that, all the study-ing expenses were undertaken by the Japanese side. Moreover, our students were granted a scholarship from the Japanese Ministry of Education. The Japanese students who came to Irkutsk in terms of exchange program had an opportunity to teach the Japanese language in the university. Professor Fuji sent 4 practical-teachers, studying materials, dictionaries and audio-cassettes. For 11 years there are at least 4 practical-teachers from Japan working at the same time at the Japanese language department. The Russian Teachers of the Japanese Language also have an opportunity for practical study in Japan.

In 1995 an official agreement on practical study was signed. It allowed the students of the University of Foreign Languages study in Japan. And from that moment the guarantor for our students was professor Yazawa. The agreement had worked for 6 years. And during that time the best students of the Japanese Language department had an opportunity to study for a year in the University of Toyama. More than 30 students who had a practical study in Toyama, nowa-days work in Japan. These are Takhinaeva V., Kinzhalova N., Berkovich I., Slastikhin D., Komkova K., Sitnikova V., Bondarenko O., Shchirezdanova V., Gelasimov P., Khankhalaeva O., Rubleva M. and many others. Many leavers of our university have graduated from the post-graduate course in Japan.

University administration and the International Relations department grant a great attention to the development of the Japanese Language department. In 2001 a prime-minister of Japan Ioshiro Mori arrived on a cultural visit to ISLU. Teachers and the best students had an oppor-tunity to communicate with Mr.Mori personally. The prime-minister presented ISLU a huge li-brary of textbooks and fiction and poetry books in the Japanese language.

The meeting with the prime-minister of Japan Ioshiro Mori.
Nowadays there are many students at the Japanese language department. And the dean of the Oriental Languages department is Kim M. B. Many contests connected with the Japanese Lan-guage are carried out in our university.

Every year the students of the second and the third course demonstrate their ability of oral speech taking part in the so-called speech-contests. The students of non-linguistic universities have an opportunity to take part in the contests of the Japanese poetry and calligraphy. Our stu-dents are successful in participating in annual Japanese Language contests that are organized by the Japanese Embassy in the University of Asia and Africa.
