As an independent University unit,
it was founded in September, 2004.
The teachers of the department work with students of
all years of study in 2 specialties: “Theoretical and
Applied Linguistics” and “Translation and the Theory
of Translation”, teaching students the practical course
of the English language and some theoretical disciplines.
To achieve a high quality of education and to assess
the productivity and the result, all the years of study
(1st to 5th) are regarded as in unison.

The sub-department "Theoretical and Applied Linguistics," with a division "Linguistics and New Information Technologies", is relatively new - barely 5 years old, but students of this department are known to be independent, energetic, and having perspective.
The sub-department of theoretical and applied linguistics gives students fundamental preparation in the domain of linguistic theory. Education is based on the following principles:
- intense study of mathematics for 3 years;
- in-depth mastering of linguistics: the theory of inner language structure, comparative linguistics, language typology, "basics of applied linguistics", "computer linguistics", "modern applied linguistics".
The students study modern English language, Latin and Greek, and oriental languages: Japanese, Chinese. Special attention is paid to computer programming, which will allow graduates to work in, among other areas, the fields of Internet design, automatic translation, and creation of computer dictionaries. All graduates receive the qualification "Linguist".
11 teachers work at the department:
- Department Head: Candidate of Philology, associate professor, Tatarinova L.V.
- Associate professors:
- Senior teachers:
- assistant teachers:
We are proud of our collective team. All of our teachers are creative, devoted
to their profession, and love working with young people.
One senior teacher, Sadovnikova O.E., organized an English language
club called “Big Ben”. There, students get acquainted with English
culture and master the language through thematic talks, meetings,
debates, and the mock celebrating of national English holidays.
In 2002 there appeared a new sub-division at ISLU, where students
could study the specialty “Theoretical and Applied Linguistics”.
The graduates may receive a diploma with the title “Linguist:
Specialist in the field of theoretical and applied linguistics
(main language – English, second - German)”.
The study program includes a lot of interesting subjects, starting
with ancient languages and finishing with artificial intelligence.
During 5 years, students master 2 foreign languages, learn about
the history and literature of foreign countries, get profound
insights into new information technologies. The best students
will have a chance to take part in competitions, which will
enable them to get on-the-job training in foreign countries.
We help each student to find his/her niche and become a valuable
specialist in his/her field.
A graduate in this specialty can become irreplaceable in different
areas of computer, technical and applied linguistics; teaching
and translation; marketing; analytical spheres on national and
international levels; business and security; customs and intelligence
services.
Despite the relative youth of the department, some impressive
results have been achieved. Programs worked out by our students
are now being used for teaching English phonetics, lexis and
grammar, and other subjects. Some testing programs have been
developed as well. Recently, we’ve been working on creating
electronic textbooks.
On November, 18, 2005 a student computer technology laboratory
was opened at our department. Since then, the possibilities
for our students have increased considerably.
Students of our department have taken part in university, city
and regional scientific conferences on applied linguistics and
information technologies. They participate in the annual competition
“The Best Student of The Year”, and as well they they take part
in the social life of the university (holidays, parties, KVN*
games, etc.)
* KVN - The club of cheerful impressionists, a long-standing friendly social competition which bridges between the USSR and the present. |
