The department completes the course of senior students training in such majors as "Theory and Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages and Culture", "Life Safety with Additional Major" and "Philology".

The department is regularly staffed with native speakers. So in the academic year 2007-2008 through the intermediary of the British Council Oliver Geidt was invited for teaching English.

    Research Work:
    The teaching staff supervises graduation works and term papers on the following topics:
  • Discourse analysis problems (prof. S. N. Plotnikova, ass.prof. N. N. Panchenko)
  • English neology (ass. prof. N. V. Shiverskaya).
  • Sociolinguistics (ass. prof. A. A. Karnauhova).
  • Semantic and pragmatic aspects of the text (ass. prof. L. V. Topka).
  • Proper names in the aspect of cross-cultural communication (ass. prof. N. V. Deryabina).
  • National mental-lingual complexes in the light of linguoculturology: contrastive-comparative aspect (ass. prof. T. V. Zhuravleva).
    The teaching staff elaborates the following complex topics:
  • Discourse analysis.
  • Cognitive semantics and pragmatics of language units at different levels.


Career Guidance
The teaching staff of the department are engaged into a large scale career guidance campaign in accordance with the model "Professions popular on the labour market" in order to improve the methods of work with the would-be students. These methods include lectures in schools assigned to the department not only in Irkutsk but in Tulun, Zheleznogorsk-Ilimskii, Usolie-Sibirskoye as well, guest counseling, carrying out tests in classes with profound study of languages. Every year the staff take part in the open day giving a talk to pupils and their parents to provide them with the necessary information about the Linguistic University. The festival organized by the Department and devoted to the culture of English-speaking countries has already become a tradition.
    The Department supports the following educational institutions:
  • In the City of Irkutsk - secondary school N 14, secondary school N 26, lyceum N 47, gymnasia N 2.
  • Gymnasia N 9 in Usolie-Sibirskoye.
  • Gymnasia N 1 in Zheleznogorsk.
Department and Students
The staff participate in annual "St. Tatiana's Day" concerts for the students, organize "The Best Student" Contest, prepare and hold the graduation ceremony.

Every autumn the Ecology Conference is held which deals with the most pressing environmental issues. The Department staff organize celebrations of holidays popular in English-speaking countries, among which there are Str. Valentine's Day, All Saints Day, etc.

"Share your English" Club has been functioning for three years.
