The English Language Sub-faculty

The present-day English language sub-faculty is a result of amalgamation of two English language chairs (of the first and the second year) of written and oral speech fundamentals that took place in 2004.

At present the sub-faculty carries out teaching the practical course of the English language as well as speech intercourse training in the first and the second university years within the speciality "The Theory and Strategy of Language Teaching" and the qualification "Linguist-Teacher". A new speciality of "Philological Education" was founded in 2005.

Here is a slogan that the sub-faculty staff tries to put into practice - WELL BEGUN IS HALF DONE! - which means that special attention is paid to the initial stage of language acquisition, when it is highly important to lay down speech skills fundamentals as well as grammatical and phonetic habits which any student is to develop hereafter.

The teaching staff of the English language sub-faculty is represented by fourteen highly qualified specialists:

The head of the English language sub-faculty is candidate of philology, assistant professor L. V. Sludneva. Having devoted more than twenty five years to work at higher institutes of education, L.V. Sludneva has a number of teaching and methodical publications (some of them - in co-authorship):

Sludneva L.V. American English. A Guide to Reading and Listening Comprehension. - Textbook. Irkutsk, ISLU, 1998.
Sludneva L.V. and others. The English Verb. A New Grammar for Everyone. - Study manual. Irkutsk, 2000.

A textbook for the students of the English Department edited by L.V. Sludneva has recently been put forward for the Ministry of Russian Education stamp. The manual entitled "A Practical Course of English" presents the first attempt to gradually form skills and habits of reasoned speech in its oral and written varieties.

Annually the sub-faculty holds image-making actions:

the ABC-party, which is a ceremony of matriculation for the first-year students;
the English Humour Party for the second-year students.
